The Huron Valley Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration has commemorated and celebrated
Dr. King’s principles and practices for the past two years. For the third annual event we are
emphasizing education and service along with our regular program.

FOCUS ON EDUCATION:
Knowing that we can truly be of service only when we have an appreciation of one another’s
differences and the challenges we face together as a local and global community, we are offering
15 workshops from local educators, students and community members to create a thought
provoking, inspiring and empowering opportunity for dialogue and action. Each workshop can
accommodate approximately 30 people. Pre-registration is encouraged by January 13th for those
who want to be assured a seat.

All workshops will provide an opportunity for community members to meet one another, to learn
more about a particular topic in an experiential way and to identify at least 3 ways they can make a
positive difference in 2008.

Some of the workshops include:
•        Drumming For Peace (All Ages)
•        Safe Schools: How You Can Help Stop Bullying
•        Faith Values and Budget Priorities
•        Building Bridges Piece By Peace – Student Led (Ages 10+)
•        American Exceptionalism
•        Create Inner Peace To Promote World Peace

FOCUS ON SERVICE:
All Huron Valley Dr. Martin  Luther King Jr. Day Celebration activities are FREE. But individuals and
families that can are encouraged to bring donations for local service providers: Community Sharing
and Gleaners Food Bank!

Many Michigan families are struggling this year and one of the small ways we can be of service is
to share our resources.

Donations accepted include:
•        Nonperishable food items (cereal, pasta, canned fruit, etc.)
•        Personal items (tooth paste, tooth brushes, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, and feminine
products)
•        Cleaning supplies (dish soap for hand washing, laundry soap, paper towel, etc.)

Community Sharing will be collecting donations Monday at the beginning of the March on Main
Street from 9:15 AM – 9:30AM and both Community Sharing and Gleaners Food Bank will have
booths at Milford High School between 11:00AM – 12:30PM during the Multi-cultural Luncheon and
Community Fair.

In addition, there will be 30 local and national social service organizations/non-profits at the Multi-
cultural Luncheon and Community Fair so folks can learn about opportunities for service (to
volunteer and donate) throughout the year!

The Huron Valley Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration is organized by a community
committee in partnership with Huron Valley Schools and many community organizations,
businesses, individuals and families, whose aim it is to keep Dr. King’s principles and practices
alive. The Celebration is an effort not only to commemorate the challenges this nation has faced,
some of which we have overcome, but to continue toward a Beloved Community where dialogue,
education, service and peace are promoted.
