Plans are underway for the 5th Annual Huron Valley Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, and the HV MLK Day Committee is looking to expand our list of members and volunteers. 2010’s events will capitalize on the best aspects of previous years’ celebrations while also having a greater concentration in the area of Service. This year’s theme of One World One Family – United in Service will be reflected in the Art/Essay/Speech competition as well as the events of the holiday. On Monday, January 18th, downtown Milford will once again host the March on Main Street at 1:00 p.m. After the March, participants can continue to honor the holiday by attending the Volunteer Fair at Milford High School, from 2:00-5:00, where a myriad of volunteering opportunities will be on display. Local citizens young and old will find dozens of ways to give back to our own Beloved Community throughout the year, and the HV MLK Day Committee hopes to see lots of people take advantage of the event. Dr. King was famous for saying that all citizens can be great because all citizens can serve; we hope that 2010’s MLK Day Celebration will allow many of our local community to discover that greatness within themselves by attending our events and finding ways to pledge time and energy for the betterment of the lives of others. Community members, organizations and businesses are welcome to be involved in the planning and execution of the event for 2010. This is an amazing opportunity to serve by example, encourage discussion, demonstrate how we can learn from and celebrate our differences while embracing our commonalities living together peaceably. How we plan and facilitate this community event is as important as the event itself, so get involved! |
