Participants can compose an original freedom song to be performed at the conclusion of the March (at The SHAC), create a visual representation (painting, drawing, collage, digital art) inspired by a pre-existing freedom song (or several songs), write a poem or story inspired by a freedom song or an artist associated with the genre, or any other artistic interpretation of music or musicians associated with freedom, equality, or civil rights!
Register for the 2015 Artist Contest on the bottom of this page. All registered entries can be dropped off at Carls Family YMCA of Milford prior to the deadline.
Age Categories: 11 & under, 12-17, 18+
Categories: All Artistic Media, Poetry, Photography, Essay, Performance.
- Essays: 500 words or less
- Speeches and Performances (submitted by dvd, youtube, or electronic file), 3 minutes or less.
- Submissions are community property
for display in upcoming years
- Prizes awarded in all age groups.

Artist Contest- 'Freedom Song' Art Contest Submission Creation Studios at SHAC:
The SHAC will open its doors to everyone to come together creatively in fellowship to create their HVMLK 2015 Artist Contest submissions. Gather to get ideas and inspiration for your contest submission, make new friends, and access all of SHAC's art supplies for $5, or bring your own supplies for no charge. HVMLK Day will provide printed lyrics from Freedom Songs, historical and artistic images associated with the Civil Rights Movement, along with music as a source of inspiration for your original Artist Contest submission. SHAC is located at 125 South Main St, Suite 700, Milford, MI. All children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

- Friday, January 2, from 11am-5pm.
